Season Three_ Episode One

Our Times is a news magazine program produced by the Video Magazine Storytelling class in the Department of Journalism at Boston University. In Season Three’s first episode, Molly Siegel takes a look at a weekly figure-drawing group; Andrea Macho focuses her camera on a woman creating a business career; Sabrina Morata creates a video portrait of a 93-year-old artist’s decades-long birthday tradition of painting a self-portrait each year; Brenda Gonzalez reports on three different elements of Latino influence.

 

Molly Siegel 

Life Drawing Boston         

Molly Siegel is a junior studying journalism and political science at Boston University. She tells the story of a weekly figure-drawing group in Boston that focuses on creating an opportunity for socializing in a stereotypically serious setting. 

Sabrina Morata

A Life in Portraits       

Sabrina Morata is a junior from Miami, Florida, pursuing a double major in Journalism and Film & TV. With a passion for visual storytelling, she is particularly drawn to the power of documentary filmmaking to capture real-world narratives and shed light on important social issues.

She tells the story of local pastel artist SaraSue Pennell, who for the past six decades has marked each year of her life by painting a self-portrait on her birthday. Each portrait tells a story, chronicling the beauty of aging, and offering a timeless window into the life of a remarkable woman.

Andrea Macho 

 MICH: The Woman Behind the              Business   

Holding a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in English with double minors in Digital Studies and Writing, Andrea Macho is studying for her Master’s degree in Journalism. Having been born and raised in Hong Kong Andrea has immersed herself in diverse cultures and customs. In this story, she looks at how a small business owner has created a career.

Brenda Gonzalez

Creating Space 

Brenda Gonzalez, a senior at Boston University is studying journalism and political science. Originally from Bradley, Illinois. Brenda’s primary focus is on multimedia political journalism, with an emphasis on photography and print. She hopes to do political and conflict reporting before going to law school for media law. 

Her story Creating Space focuses on three different elements of Latino influence: performance, culture, and community as shown by Sabor Latino, BU’s Latin dance group, and the Veronica Robles Cultural Center in East Boston. Her background as a first-generation Mexican-American influences all the work she does.
